Monkeys are wiser than men

I thought I had to share these unbelievable parts/facts in the book by Charles Darwin Descent of Man.

The sentences are from chapter 1. That chapter is dedicated to explaining the similarities between humans and monkeys (not apes). Darwin hypothesises that if similarities exists between two creatures then that means they had a common ancestor (even though there are major flaws and one of it is the fact that homology assumes that similarities are due to common descent. It doesn't prove it nor can it prove it but we'll follow the logic. Read more on the problem here). So Darwin wanted to show similarities not just in bodily structure and brain structure but even with the taste buds. Darwin said,

"Many kinds of monkeys have a strong taste for tea, coffee, and spirituous liquors: they will also, as I have myself seen, smoke tobacco with pleasure"[1]

Then Darwin shared,

"Brehm asserts that the native of north-eastern Africa catch the wild baboons by exposing vessels with strong beer, by which they are made drunk. He has seen some of these animals, which he kept in confinement, in this state; and he gives a laughable account of their behaviour and strange grimaces. On the following morning they were very cross and dismal; they held their aching heads with both hands, and wore a most pitiable expression: when beer or wine was offered them, they turned away with disgust, but relished the juice of lemons"[2]

And finally,

"An American monkey, an Ateles, after getting drunk on brandy, would never touch it again, and thus was wiser than many men" [3]

Unbelievable but very amusing facts. Monkeys are wiser than men.

Jean Baptiste Pierre Antoine de Monet, Chevalier de Lamarck

This name (in the title) sounds like some commander or soldier from the past and you're right. Jean Baptiste Lamarck is a truly forgotten man of our time, in fact he's only known by the "long giraffe neck eating leaves from trees" man. Even Subboor, in his recent debate, mentioned that. But far from that, Lamarck was actually quite different from who we think he is or what our textbooks say about him.

Let me be frank, I can not speak French but I have read a bit of his translated work about his hypothesis and I noticed the obvious connection between Lamarck and Charles Darwin.

Lamarck was born on 1st August 1744, long before Darwin. Later in his life, Lamarck devised his hypothesis of how evolution occurred. His hypothesis was rejected despite his fame on the work on invertebrates (he coined that word -  so blame him if you hated that word in your high school). It was rejected so much that he was rejected by people and he died blind with his 2 daughters serving him in his old age. He published his hypothesis in the month of "flowering"[1] but I guess he didn't get a flowery end.

Lamarck was born in a family that was devoted to military but Lamarck was sent, by his father, to Jesuit College for ecclesiastical (relating to church) career. He never liked it. After his father died, Jean left the Jesuit College and became a soldier to fight in the battle of Fissingshausen - but lost. His fellow officers were all killed. Later on he stopped engaging in war and went to Monaco (very little tiny place next to France where rich people live and pay no tax - so called "equality") and in Monaco, his comrade physically lifted Lamarck from his head! What a fool. His lymphatic glands (in the neck) caught inflammation and thus he was forced to leave his position as a lieutenant (which he had been promoted to).  After this, due to his health not being good, he worked in a bank. He then took a course in medicine and met Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Lamarck preferred, in fact loved, botany than medicine and so he left medicine for it. Anyway, in 1781, Lamarck received a commission to visit botanical gardens and institutions in Germany, Hungary and Holland. He collected rare plants and made notes for Jardin du Roi botanical garden in Paris. Then, Museum d'Histoire Naturelle was founded. Lamarck was the chairman of zoology in Naturelle. As a chairman, he threw botany to one side and studied invertebrates and published 7 volumes on them in his Histoire Naturelle des Animaux sans vertebres (1815-1822). He also published a book on meteorology but nothing important was in it and he published Philosophie Zoologique. With his meteorology book, which, according to the people at the time contained ridiculous speculation and so he was ridiculed at the time. But with his Zoologique book which is based on natural history, he went to the emperor Napoleon and handed him his book (perhaps Lamarck's motive in giving Napoleon his book was to get his fame back since he was ridiculed?). However Napoleon said:

"What is this? said the Emperor. "Is it your absurd Meteorologie with which you are disgracing your old age? Write on natural history, and I will receive your works with pleasure. This volume I only accept out of consideration for your grey hair. Here"[2] (Napoleon stated as he handed the book to someone else, perhaps his servant).

The book was about natural history but Lamarck didn't say that, he just cried.

Today Lamarck's hypothesis, is more or less forgotten, but it was much more than just inherited acquired characteristic, which simply means, whatever a person acquires during his life time, like, bigger muscles, this acquired characteristic is inherited to his descendants; thus the muscles of the children would improve. Or the famous giraffe neck. Giraffes stretch their necks, this characteristics is inherited to other giraffes and eventually over long period of time, giraffes have long necks.His hypothesis had two main principles: (1) inherent progress and (2) adaptation in environment. That is for life after it appearance. So where did life itself come from? Lamarck believed that it naturally appeared from molecules,

"Life and organisation are products of nature, and at the same time results of the powers conferred upon nature by the Supreme Author of all things and of the laws by which she herself is constituted: this can no longer be called in question. Life and organisation are thus purely natural phenomena, and their destruction in any individual is also a natural phenomenon, necessarily following from the first"[3]

Lamarck believed that not only life is spontaneous (life from non-life) but after life's appearance, it naturally evolves, hence, inherent progress. Thus, because life is constantly evolving from non molecules, it means that there is no such thing as extinction since life according to Lamarck is like a ladder and there is always a creature evolving to the new stage. So imagine a ladder with 10 steps, and life steps on the first step and then another life appears spontaneously and also steps on the first step of the ladder but by the time the second life hits the first step, the first life is already on the second step of the ladder and so on. Thus each step is occupied and therefore no such thing as extinction occurs. So why do we have a clear cut distinction between, say mammals and birds? Such a big gap must not exist. Lamarck tried to solve this by pointing to the fact that we still haven't discovered or identified all creatures on Earth. But when we find them, then we can fill the gaps. But Lamarck didn't just blame the lack of discovery but he postulated an example which "proves" his hypothesis. He used the Ornithorhyncus (Platypus) as proof that here is a mammal with a characteristic of a bird. Lamarck called them (with Echidna) "Animals intermediate between birds and mammals"[4]

Adaptation in environment

Lamarck believed that animals can also change due to the environment they live in. The reason why a giraffe has a long neck he argued was due to the fact that trees are a little long, and so the giraffes must stretch their necks in order to reach the trees (couldn't the giraffe just eat from the ground?) and therefore this stretch is gradually increasing the length of the neck by the mechanics that he postulated and called inherent acquired characteristics. Due to the fact that the environment in which the animal resides in - the adaptation changes slowly too, it logically means that animals too change slowly,

"Not only is this the greatest marvel that the power of nature has attained, but it is besides a proof of the lapse of a considerable time; since nature has done nothing but by slow degrees"[5]

Depending where you live, that would, in a Lamarckian worldview, determine whether you will use certain body parts or not. This is where his "law of use and disuse" comes in. So if a fish lived in a cave which is dark, the fish won't use it's eyes, thus based on the law of use and disuse, the eyes will eventually disappear in the future generations since it's not using the eye. Which is why Lamarck said that environment (and therefore the mode of life) controls the body.[6] Lamarck used the eyes of the mole as an example. He said "Yet the mole, whose habits require a very small use of sight, has only minute and hardly visible eyes, because it uses that organ so little"[7]

Even though this is a very summarized explanation of Lamarck's hypothesis, you can, nevertheless see gradualism, adaptation and evolution in it, which is from where Charles Darwin got some of his ideas from. Of course Darwin got his ideas from others too but Lamarck's works no doubt influenced Darwin, especially when Darwin read Lamarck's work via Charles Lyell's critique of Lamarckism in Principles of Geology volume 2 and owning Philosophical Zoology.[8]

By comparing Lamarck's evolutionary ideas and Darwin's evolutionary ideas we see very clear cut similarities and the differences between them are fairly small. Both accepted gradualism (geology and biology), evolution, environmental adaptation and the law of use & disuse. The difference is that according to Lamarck, environmental adaptation is a force that is second to the inherent progress whilst Darwin postulated adaptation as the force itself that made all the diversity. Lamarck accepted inherent progress whilst Darwin accepted adaptation as the factor that causes evolution, so Darwin rejected inherent progress.

Summary

There is no doubt that Lamarck's ideas are very similar to Darwin's and therefore I conclude that Lamarck was one of the factors that influenced Darwin. Of course Robert Chambers & Erasmus Darwin and other evolutionists influenced Darwin as well but it seems clear that Lamarck influenced him a great deal.

Note: Yes Lamarck did use the giraffe as an example, that was not made up. Lamarck said,

"It is interesting to observe the result of habit in the peculiar shape and size of the giraffe (Camelo-pardalis): this animal, the largest of the mammals, is known to live in the interior of Africa in places where the soil is nearly always arid and barren, so that it is obliged to browse on the leaves of the trees and to make constant effort to reach them. From this habit long maintained in all its race, it has resulted that the animal's fore-legs have become longer than its hind legs, and that its neck lengthened to such a degree that the giraffe, without standing up on its hind legs, attains a height of six meters (nearly 20 feet)"[9]

That's the only time he spoke about giraffes. He spoke about adaptation much more, in fact a whole chapter is dedicated to it called "Of the influence of the environment on the activities and habits of animals",  but giraffes are the only thing we know of his hypothesis. I guess Lamarck answered my question "couldn't the giraffe just eat from the ground?" when he said "it is obliged to browse on the leaves of the trees and to make constant effort to reach them" but what about the animals that don't have long necks? They still coexist with giraffes...

The cause of his blindness (for 10 years until he died) was suggested to be due to his hard work involving looking through the microscope too much - a legend that deserves respect.

Stephen Jay Gould

Stephen Jay Gould (1941-2002) is, without a doubt, a forgotten legend among the evolutionists of today because of their preference to gradualism. He is remembered just for his punctuated equilibrium hypothesis which was designed to challenged two main aspects of the conventional wisdom of the time, gradualism (on macro-evolutionary level) and individual selection[1].

But his general work ranging from classical literature to modern literature (that would be 1970-2000 in his time) is forgotten and I decided to write this article to remember some, in fact very little (when you look at the huge number and size of his books) of his work and it's importance to the overall landscape of evolutionary debate.

One of my favorite things of Gould is his Cordelia dilemma[2]. He named it 'Cordelia' to remember the terrible fate of King Lear who had 3 daughters. Lear wanted to leave the biggest share of his kingdom, after his death, to the daughter that professed the most love to him. So two of the daughters, Goneril & Regan, excessively lied about their love to him and Cordelia simply remained silent, or hardly said a thing because she believed that the love in her heart was more "ponderous" (i.e. large) than the tongue. Lear got angry and disowned her which affected him and lead to his madness, blindness and death.[3] But Gould used her as an example because nature might 'say' something whilst we don't recognize it - in fact we don't want to recognize it because of the a priori belief in gradualism. What Gould meant was that the conventional Neo-Darwinian belief in gradualism was not supported by the fossil record, rather because Charles Darwin (1809-1882) wanted extreme slowness and this was simply adopted by the predecessors evolutionist after Darwin.

When Darwin published his Origin of Species (1859) he made it clear that evolution works in a very gradual and slow manner, depending on the rate of birth but nevertheless slow & gradual. For example Darwin said,

"Although each formation may mark a very long lapse of years, each perhaps is short compared with the period requisite to change one species into another"[4]

"Nature acts uniformly and slowly during vast periods of time..."[5]

And since the formulation of Darwinism (1859-1890's), which advocated gradualism, Neo Darwinism (1890's - 1970's) came out with the same gradualistic belief. This idea of gradualism advocated the view that evolution is very slow, bit by bit and therefore we should look at the fossil record and see no same creature in two completely different ages. So let's say in zone A we see a fish, we expect it to be gone by the time it reaches zone B (assume that the time between zone A and B are very long, say a million years) but if we see a fish in zone Z then clearly that fish survived and did not change whatsoever from zone A all the way to zone Z (that would be 25 million years of no change). So if for such a long time, we do not see gradual change but rather stability then you cannot mix the two ideas together. So how did the Neo Darwinist reconcile such contradictory results between the theoretical, a priori, assumption and stability? Gould shares 2 main important points:

1. It wasn't shared in the technical literature.

2. If it was known, it would've been seen as "negative" result.

Gould was aghast by the fact that not many biologists know the fact that stasis ruled the paleontological world. He said,

"The common knowledge[6] of a profession often goes unrecorded in technical literature for two reasons: one need not preach commonplaces to the initiated; and one should not attempt to inform uninitiated in publications they do not read. The longterm stasis, following a geologically abrupt origin of most fossil morphospecies, has always been recognized by professional paleontologists..."[7]

So the reasons why it was not shared are because; you do not have to repeat the same fact known by many already and no need to teach the laymen, like us, since we do not read such publication. Such knowledge which surely does question the Neo darwinian mechanism was held back for the sake of a theoretical belief.

If it was known, it would've been seen as "negative" result.

Gould shares a personal story of his personal Ph.D adviser John Imbrie. Imbrie was a paleoclimatologist who accepted gradualism because he simply was taught it. But Imbrie went out and studied 30 different species of brachiopods from the Devonian era (in Michigan Basin) and realized that all but one have remained stable for all those millions upon millions of years, that other one was ambiguous. But when he shared his results, it wasn't published as a...

"...triumphant paper documenting the important phenomenon of stasis. Instead, he just become disappointed at such "negative" results after so much effort. He buried his data in a technical taxonomic monograph that no working biologist would ever encounter... and eventually left the profession for something more "productive""[8]

Such problems have no doubt happened again and again and the reason why stasis was seen as "negative" result was because stasis was not expected. Gould, on the other hand, does not see the stasis as a negative evidence but rather as positive evidence that the fossil record is signalling (obviously). The reason why stasis was seen as negative was also because all evidence, no matter which one, is always interpreted through a theory. Evidence doesn't speak. You interpret the evidence. That's another reason why stasis was ignored even though known by many paleontologists.

Another thing I like about Gould is his Petrus Camper story[10].

Petrus Camper (1722-1789) was a Dutch physician who was intrigued by what 'methods' the Greeks used to make sculptures of their gods for the face. He claimed to have discovered it and published an image in his thesis (see images below). Camper never intended racism but you can easily see how racism is extrapolated from his work.










In the Academy of Drawing in 1770 the director distorted Camper's view and told the people that these evidences were evidence for the Great Chain of Being[11] (an evolutionary idea which promoted inherent progress evolution and that the higher you are on the scale, the better evolved you are, the lower you are on the scale, the less evolved you are). What is strange is that Petrus was a monogenist (believed in a single origin for mankind) yet his work was used by polygenist! It's amazing how ideas get circulated around to racist people like Jules J. Virey, Samuel T. Soemmering and no doubt to the hands of the Nazis & to many eugenicist (inspired by Social Darwinism which was inspired by Charles Darwin from both his Origin of Species and Descent of Man).

But as Gould ends his essay on Petrus, he said,

"He became the semiofficial grandpappy of the quantitative approach to scientific racism, yet his own concept of human variability precluded judgements about innate worth a priori... He became a villain of science when he tried to establish criteria for art. Camper got a bad posthumous shake on earth..."[12]

What amazes me is that Gould actually knew this stuff. Seldom do you find an evolutionist who is open to such things (at least on a public level) even though Gould was silent on the racism perpetuated by Charles Darwin.

The final thing I like about Gould is his timeless critique of Neo Darwinism.

Despite the strong wall built by Neo Darwinist since 1959, Gould simply did not buy their theory. Gould's legacy, perhaps the most important legacy is his critique of Neo Darwinism. You see, ideas are sometimes taught as fact, like Neo Darwinism, to kids. Due to such indoctrination, those kids, when they grow up, won't really know the difference between fact from fiction and simply accept that "smart" scientist with white coats and goggles know their stuff even though they themselves understand nothing. Anagenesis, cladogenesis, homology, convergent evolution... have you heard of them? No. Do you understand them? No. Actually you have and do but those words are there to fool you so you simply accept that "smart" guys know it all.

Every hypothesis has it's core and for Neo Darwinism there are 3 main cores: gradualism, individual selection and microevolution.

Gould (as I have shown in the first point) critiqued gradualism because the fossil record doesn't fit the hypothesis of Neo Darwinism and he critiqued microevolution to macroevolution. Microevolution is a flimsy word and generally it's a trap but there is a definite limit between micro and macroevolution. He didn't critique it and left it unhealed but rather he used other causes that he thought were important to cause macroevolution. These causes are known among many evolutionist today[13] The reason why Gould critiqued the microevolution to macroevolution claim was because if it's true then we expect gradualism than stasis and also we don't expect to see abrupt appearance in the fossil record. Abrupt appearance is the sudden appearance of a creature. The creature(s) just "pops" into existence without any prior ancestor. Due to this discontinuous pattern, micro to macro cannot possibly be the explanation and that is why Gould critiqued it. But apart from Gould, there are other evidences as well that perhaps would've impressed Gould (actually refuted evolution altogether). It turns out that one protein cannot evolve into another protein even if they are similar.[14] That means evolution couldn't have possibly occurred since we have many proteins and other cellular machines. Another point is that developmental gene regulatory networks cannot be mutated haphazardly either. If you introduce a change to it, it will cause death to the growing embryo. That is why Eric Davidson (who did the experiments on the developmental gene regulatory networks) said,

"Neo-Darwinian evolution is uniformitarian in that it assumes that all process works the same way, so that evolution of enzymes or flower colors can be used as current proxies for study of evolution of the body plan. It erroneously assumes that change in protein coding sequence is the basic cause of change in developmental program; and it erroneously assumes that evolutionary change in body plan morphology occurs by a continuous process. All of these assumptions are basically counterfactual. This cannot be surprising, since the neo-Darwinian synthesis from which these ideas stem was a pre-molecular biology concoction focused on population genetics and adaptation natural history, neither of which have any direct mechanistic import for the genomic regulatory systems that drive embryonic development of the body plan"[15]

Not only does the fossil record fail to show what Neo Darwinist need but recent evidence is building up to show that it can't happen which is why, in the recent Royal Society meeting held in London, did evolutionary scientists from across the world meet to discuss these problems facing the orthodox evolution taught in schools.

Anyway, Gould left a lot of knowledge but I have only shared a little.

By the way, do not think I believe in punctuated equilibrium that Gould proposed, I don't accept it. However if someone says what is right or interesting then it must be known.

The Honourable Tooth

Seldom does a tooth get a lot of honour. You see, if we ever stumbled upon a tooth from Prophets or Messengers عليهم السلام then certainly it's respected for it was on the bodies of the most blessed humans ever to walk on the face of the Earth. Which makes sense.

However, there are other people in this world who would honour a tooth because there is nothing more to honour.

During the devastating war caused by the unnecessary European clash, a man from America, Harold J. Cook, dug the ground and found a tooth in 1917.[1] Harold, for unknown reason, kept the tooth with him for five years and then decided to hand it over, in 1922, to Henry Fairfield Osborn, President of American Museum of Natural History and who was responsible for expeditions to China.

Cook sent a letter to Osborn, dated, February 25, 1922, stating,

"I have had here, for some little time, a molar tooth from the Upper, or Hipparion phase of the Snake Creek beds, that very
closely approaches the human type, It was found associated with the other typical fossils of the Snake Creek, and is mineralized in the same fashion as they are...

Inasmuch as you are particularly interested in this problem and, in collaboration with Dr. Gregory and others, are in the best position of anyone to accurately determine the relationships of this tooth, if it can be done, I will be glad to send it on to you, should you care to examine and study it..."[2]

The tooth was sent to Osborn. On receiving the tooth, Osborn replied back saying,

"The instant your package arrived, I sat down with the tooth, in my window, and I said to myself: "It looks one hundred per cent anthropoid." I then took the tooth into Doctor Matthew's room and we have been comparing it with all the books, all the casts and all the drawings, with the conclusion that it is the last right upper molar tooth of some higher Primate, but distinct... We await, however, Doctor Gregory's verdict tomorrow morning... but it looks to me as if the first anthropoid ape of America had been found by the one man entitled to find it, namely, Harold J, Cook!"[3]

After the tooth was examined by Osborn and Dr Matthew, they determined it to be the second (m2) or third (m3) upper right molar tooth. But the Curator William Gregory and Dr Milo Hellman claimed it to be m2 and they claimed that it didn't look chimpanzee so they believed it resembled Pithecanthropus and man.[4]

The tooth was named by Osborn as Hesperopithecus haroldcookii (which means Harold Cook's Anthropoid of the Western World)

Osborn concluded that this m2 resembled the chimpanzee most but it's still distinct[5]. Osborn then claimed that the molar crown resembled the "Homo sapiens mongoloideus" type (the Mongoloids) but that it was also still distinct, thus, Osborn agreed with Cook, Hellman and Gregory that the tooth was related closely to human but misleading to claim that it was an ape since they needed more evidence to determine if it was an ape or human (or perhaps even a missing link) and disagreed with the claim that it resembled Pithecanthropus.[6]

Also in 1908, William Matthew found an m3 tooth which was "generically" related to Hesperopithecus but not "specifically" related[7].

Those two teeth were from the same age as Pliohippus (extinct horse), Ilingoceras (antelopes) of Asiatic affinity and hornless Rhinoceros.[8]

The first journal to record[9] Hesperopithecus was the American Museum Novitates by Osborn himself in April 25th, 1922.[10] In this article Osborn claimed that "they" were "...eagerly anticipating some discovery of this kind, but not prepared for such convincing evidence of the close faunal relationship between eastern Asia and western North America as is revealed by this diminutive specimen."[11]

Then the tooth was most honoured by being advertised next in the journal Science by Osborn.[12] The difference between the two articles is that Novitates has pictures and Science has no pictures, the text is exactly the same. Osborn claimed in the Science article (just as he did in the Novitates) that the animal to which this tooth belonged "...wandered over here from Asia... [and] It is one of the greatest surprises in the history of American paleontology and I am delighted that you are the man [i.e. Harold Cook] who found it"[13]

The news reached Arthur Smith Woodward in England. He responded to the news, thus the tooth was again most honoured for the third time, in the journal Nature[14]. Woodward's title is most curious because it's entitled "A Supposed Ancestral Man in North America" but Osborn, Hellman, Gregory and Matthew didn't yet claim it to be the ancestral link. So why did Woodward name his article that way? One possible reason is because the tooth was said to be similar to Pithecanthropus which definitely was claimed to be a missing link - at least by it's discoverer. Or maybe he misunderstood? Or perhaps the newspaper said something else? But the earliest newspaper recording of Hesperopithecus was 14 days after Woodward published his article[15], so perhaps it's not newspapers. It follows that he misunderstood or something else happened which is unknown to us.

Nevertheless, Woodward, perhaps in tumult, responded back stating,

"Prof. H. F. Osborn has just described a water worn small molar tooth from a Pliocene formation in Nebraska, U.S.A., as the first evidence of an anthropoid primate discovered in the New World [America]. The specimen was found in the Snake Creek beds by Mr. Harold J. Cook, who has already made known numerous important remains of Pliocene mammals from Nebraska, some showing marked Asiatic affinities. With the aid of Drs. W. D. Matthew, W. K. Gregory, and H. Hellman, Prof. Osborn has determined the tooth to be a second upper molar, and he has named the unknown genus and species to which it belonged Hesperopithecus haroldcookii...

[The tooth] should be made not with any Primate tooth but with the last lower molar in the primitive bears. In general appearance and shape the crown is very suggestive of that of the... Hyaenarctos... There is, indeed, some reason to suspect that Hesperopithecus has received an inappropriate name"[16]

So Woodward thought the tooth could be of a bear (Hyaenarctos). Others thought it's somehow human or perhaps ape.

The tooth then appears in the The Illustrated London News[17]. The newspaper contains the famous artwork by Amedee Forestier. Along with Hesperopithecus you can see: the wife, Pliohippus (horses), Rhinoceros (between the two trees), Pliauchenia (camels - top right), perhaps antelopes (also between the trees) and the artists name (bottom left corner).

Under the image it has some text which says,

"...Regarding the above illustration, Professor Elliot Smith says: "Mr. Forestier has made a remarkable sketch to convey some idea of the possibilities suggested by this discovery. As we know nothing of the creature's form, his reconstruction is merely the expression of an artist's brilliant imaginative genius. But if, as the peculiarities of the tooth suggest, Hesperopithecus was a forerunner of Pithecanthropus, he may have been a creature such as Mr. Forestier has depicted... Mr. Forestier himself writes: "This ape-man is supposed to have migrated from Asia under favourable conditions. He would compare with Pithecanthropus, the Java ape-man, who proportions and attitude were those of the average Englishman. The pose of the head should be noted, large muscles from the occiput to the back and shoulders having to counteract the weight of the prognathous head and heavy jaw - a simian character". Unlike Colombus, Hesperopithecus, is believed to have reached America by land, travelling from Asia by "a land bridge enjoying a warm climate"[18]

This image came with a full article by Grafton Elliot Smith who made a full commentary on the next page. In the newspaper article Elliot wrote:

"Professor Henry Fairfield Osborn's announcement... of a tooth. which he and his distinguished colleagues... are unanimous in regarding... [it] the Order Primate... [this] is an event of momentous importance to every student of the history of the human family.

For many years an experienced geologist, Mr. Harold J. Cook, has been collecting the remains of the extinct fauna that lived  in Western Nebraska in Pliocene times... Since then Mr Cook has continued the work of collecting and has acquired thorough knowledge of the stratigraphy... Hence he is not likely to have been deceived  as to the horizon in which a particular fragment was found. When some months ago (Feb. 25, 1922) he wrote to Professor Osborn [stating that he found a molar tooth that] closely approaches the human type." the accuracy and reliability of Mr Cook's identification of it's its geological age and provenance was not questioned..."[19]

Elliot carries on talking about how Gregory arrived at the conclusion that the tooth is of Pithecanthropus & man rather than apes. And he said how it (the tooth) was further studied and shown to be of a human but not us nor Pithecanthropus but a different "genera of the human family". He carries on saying that this "astounding" discovery needs more evidence and how tantalizing it is to find a fossil, how all extant humans are related to sapiens but Australians are the most primitive after Homo neanderthalensis,[20] and how the negro (blacks) and Australians still retain the primitive black skin colour which was probably common to all species and genera of the human family and of the chimpanzee and gorilla. Then he carries on saying how after the other humans split of the blacks and Australians, the skin become less dark thus producing Mongoloid, Alpine and finally Nordic (white) races. Then he goes on to speak of the other species of more primitive humans like Neanderthals, Heidelberg and Rhodesian man. Then going even more primitive he talks about Eoanthropus (the famous Piltdown man) and Pithecanthropus. And now... he adds Hesperopithecus to the grand family tree. He called it "long-lost cousin" of the family and says,


"...For not only is he the only human being so far discovered who lived in the remotely distant time of the Pliocene period, but he and his forbears had already wandered so far from the original home of the family in Asia or Africa as North America"[21]

The imagination has gone wild but he carries on,

"The discovery of a single tooth may seem rather a frail and hazardous basis upon which to build such tremendous and unexpected conclusions: and many, if not most, scientists have grave doubts as to the justification for such an interpretation. But the specimen was discovered by a geologist of wide experience, and its horizon has been satisfactorily established. Moreover, the determination of its affinities and its identification as one of the higher Primates closely akin to the Ape-Man of Java, Pithecanthropus, have been made by the most competent authorities on the specific characters of fossilised mammalian teeth, Professor Osborn and Drs. Matthew and Gregory, who not only have had a wider experience of such material than any other paleontologists, but also are men with exact knowledge and sound judgement. One can therefore, place implicit trust in their claim that the tooth found in the Pliocene beds of Nebraska is really that of a primitive member of the human family. Hesperopithecus is more nearly akin to Pithecanthropus than any other member of the human family, and the fact that the latter was found in what at the end of the Pliocene period was the south-eastern corner of Asia, and the former in North America, which was connected with a Eastern Asia by a land bridge enjoying a warm climate, minimises the difficultly of explaining a discovery that at first sight seems to be wholly incredible."[22]

After skipping what is already mentioned (ref 18) Elliot said,

"Professor Osborn tells me that a great expedition is being organised to make a thorough search of the Snake Creek beds for further remains of perhaps the most remarkable and intriguing fossil ever discovered. In the meantime he is preparing for a British journal a fuller account of the teeth (for a second but much-worn tooth of Hesperopithecus has been in the American Museum for several years) and the evidence relating to the Pliocene connections between Asia and America; and he tells me that this statement will afford ample justification for the tremendous claims he has based upon such small scraps of what really seems to be the earliest member of the human family so far discovered."[23]

Remember Elliot is a professor of anatomy. He also has a family tree which includes Hesperopithecus. Yes, within 3 months of the announcement it has a place in our tree.

As it's shown in that tree of life Hesperopithecus is right at the bottom right corner which means it's not our ancestor but still an ape-man. Notice that no one had yet claimed that Hesperopithecus was a missing link but rather something closely related to Pithecanthropus (which was human but they, with their fancy evolutionary ideas, failed to see that), humans and ape-man. And ape-man doesn't necessarily mean it's a missing link but rather it means that the being could be a cousin of us but still retain his ape characters. Only Woodward, either erroneously or some reason we don't know, called it a missing link.[14]


Now Osborn takes it further and honoured the tooth for the fourth time by publishing it in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America.[25] This article mentions how the tooth is further "proved" by the other m3 tooth and Osborn said "The animal is certainly a new genus of anthropoid ape, probably an animal which wandered over from Europe and Asia..."[26] He also admits that "we must seek more material before we can determine its relationships" and someone "humorously" mocked William Jennings Bryan by calling Hesperopithecus "Bryopithecus." Bryan was a staunch anti-evolutionist and certainly a smart one. He blamed evolution as one of the factors that caused the First World War[27]. Due to his staunchness the evolutionist wanted to ridicule him by naming that tooth Bryopithecus. Despite all the naming, in the end Bryan was the intelligent among them and later ان شاء الله you will see why. Osborn said that he "advised" Bryan to consult a passage in the Bible, Book of Job, which says "Speak to the earth and it shall teach thee" and that it is a "remarkable coincidence that the first earth to speak on this subject is the sandy earth of the Middle Pliocene Snake Creek deposits of western Nebraska." What that means is that because Bryan was born in Nebraska and the tooth is found in Nebraska therefore Bryan should accept evolution.[28]

The optimism of Elliot and the incredulity of Woodward is what bothered Osborn, so he decided to reply to the two "extremes" in Nature.[29] He said,

"One of my friends, Prof. G. Elliot Smith, has perhaps shown too great optimism in his most interesting newspaper and magazine articles on Hesperopithecus, while another of my friends, Dr. A. Smith Woodward, has shown too great incredulity in his article in Nature of June 10, It is in reply to both extremes that I have especially prepared for Nature addition information regarding the fauna and habitat of this new Primate..."[30]

In the article he said that "Fresh and violent attacks on the Darwinian theory have been made during the last two or three years all over the United States, especially under the leadership of William Jennings Bryan, a man of ingenious and fertile mind and persuasive powers of oratory, gifted as a politician and as a religious advocate."[31] But because Bryan is an opponent of Darwinism (as Osborn said) and that high authorities in science won't persuade Bryan (no surprise, he had a common sense brain) so Osborn referred Bryan to the writings of St. Augustine and the same passage of Job. "In brief, I advised Mr. Bryan to drop all his books... [and] become an evolutionist" without losing his religion. You can clearly see how Bryan was a thorn to the evolutionist.

Osborn then mentioned that "While we have all eagerly looked forward to such a discovery, and I have always regarded it as possible, I have never regarded it as probable, for the reason that the higher Primates, seeking the protection of forests, never venture out for long distances on the plains; moreover, accustomed to a forest fruit supply, they would have been exposed to great dangers in migrating from Asia to Western North America except by the aid of a continuous forest belt..."[32]

After repeating everything he already mentioned in Novitates and Science he just adds his disagreement with Woodward's claim that the tooth was of a bear,[33] and adds a picture of comparative study of different teeth and concludes "...[sic] It is therefore a new and independent type of Primate, and we must seek more material before we can determine it's relationships" and in the next paragraph he said "I have not stated that Hesperopithecus was either an Ape-Man or in the direct line of human ancestry, because I consider it quite possible that we may discover an anthropoid apes (Simiidae) with teeth closely imitating those of man (Hominidae), just as we have discovered in the true Piltdown Man (Eoanthropus) teeth closely imitating those of chimpanzee"

Which simply means that he disagreed with the hype of Elliot and the dullness of Woodward by saying that he's not sure. That doesn't mean he didn't believe that Hesperopithecus was not a creature walking on two legs or four. He already assumed it could walk but whether it was an ape or man or possibly a missing link was doubtful.

Three months after that Nature article, William P. Pycraft wrote an article in Nature about what he thought on this whole disagreement.[34] He said that the comparison (above) was not good, nothing was definite and they need more evidence. He also requested Osborn to make a comparison of a worn tooth from a bear in order to see if Woodward was right and concluded very convincingly,

"The danger of dogmatising on the evidence afforded by photography and casts alone, was forcibly illustrated in the case of Piltdown man. But it is also imperatively necessary, in the interest of science, that even remotely possible relationships should be seriously examined. It is always unwise to assume that what ought to be, must be"[35]

Two months after Pycraft's words, Gregory and Hellman wrote a full scientific article analyzing the tooth[36] in January 1923. Skipping the scientific jargon where they compare the tooth with a chimpanzee, American Indian and Pithecanthropus. The conclusion of the article was that:

(1) Hesperopithecus cannot be the bear

(2) cannot be procyonid (like raccoons) (but who thought of that?)

(3) there is very little similarities between Hesperopithecus and Lagothrix (south american monkey)

(4) gibbon, gorilla, orangutan and chimpanzee are all different from Hesperopithecus but close to chimpanzee yet distinct

(5) thus they agree with Osborn that it is an unknown primate but it has a combination of chimpanzee, Pithecanthropus and of man yet "it is hardly safe to affirm more than that Hesperopithecus was structurally related to all three"[37]

(6) it is hard to determine whether Hesperopithecus was or was not an ancestor to man but from the comparisons, the Hesperopithecus contradict all the human special features in tooth, thus Hesperopithecus represent a primitive feature which no one has witnessed

(7) Hesperopithecus can be within the group of "Hominoidea" (the group which includes humans and apes).

(8) Hesperopithecus managed to survive and apparently spread "northeastward" along with other mastodons (elephants), antelopes and other mammals.

They even show what they believed by making a tree of human life where Hesperopithecus is believed to be an off-shot of the descendants towards gorillas & chimpanzees.

This study was criticized by Dr. Gerrit S. Miller[38]. So Gregory and Hellman responded back and honoured the tooth for the fifth time by publishing it in Bulletin American Museum of Natural History[39]. Skipping the scientific jargon, the conclusions are:

(1) The tooth is m2

(2) The tooth resembles chimps and gorilla more than orangutan and Hellman thinks its more towards human resemblance whilst Gregory think its more towards apishness.

(3) Gregory and Hellman disagrees with Miller's claim that Pithecanthropus is of extinct Javan great ape because Pithecanthropus looks like "human, or subhuman" and of course that logically means Hesperopithecus cannot be Pithecanthropus since Hesperopithecus is not human.

(4) Not everyone agrees with Osborn that the tooth should be assigned to a new genus & species because some think that the tooth belongs to (1) bear (2) unknown carnivore (3) procyonid (also carnivore but not "unknown") (4) gigantic relative of South American monkeys Pithecia and Lagothrix (5) horse and finally (6) gigantic mammal.

Then an unknown man mentions the tooth briefly in 1924[40]. This unknown man mentions the study of Gregory and Hellman and their disagreement with Miller and Woodward and concludes that there needs to be more material.

Then in May 1924, an unknown man talks about the tooth again.[41] The man mentions a study done by A. A. Mendes-Correa which appeared in Scientia. Mendes-Correa said (according to the unknown man) that "...too great reliance is placed upon the evidential value of the teeth of fossil man, particularly of the so-called Hesperopithecus tooth from Nebraska..."

Then it was briefly mentioned the next year, 1925, in Nature.[42] The unknown man talks about a work compiled by Matthew. The work talks about many birds, reptiles and amphibians and the "...celebrated tooth of Hesperopithecus haroldcookii..."

Then in November 1926, the tooth was honoured for the sixth time by being mentioned, by Harold, in Scientific American. Harold published the article mentioning the antiquity of man in America.[43] Hesperopithecus was mentioned twice, one by an "editor" and the other by Harold,

(1) "Not only has he contributed specimens to many large museums, but his recent discovery of the fossil tooth of an anthropoid ape of great antiquity made him well known among scientists"

(2) "That such stocks did enter America [he's talking about the "migration" of animals from Asia] at this time we know through the finding of the much-discussed Hesperopithecus..."

Then in December 1926, an unknown man talks about the above article in Nature[44] about the favourable condition in which the animals migrated from Asia to America and that Hesperopithecus was with them.

In 1927 Osborn wrote a new article in Science[45] talking about brain sizes, history of the evolution of man and does not at all talk about Hesperopithecus except once by misspelling the name, he wrote it as "Herperopithecus". And he does include a human tree of life which he includes Hesperopithecus. See right and below of the trees that were included in his article. The difference between the tree of life that Gregory made is that Osborn thinks Hesperopithecus is more "human" based on his tree because you can see Hesperopithecus being an offshot of the descendants towards humans. Whilst Gregory thinks it's an offshot from the descendants who became gorillas and chimpanzees. It seems like Osborn is saying that Hesperopithecus is our "long-lost" brother rather than cousin as Elliot and Gregory show.

But the hype was dying. An article in Science in 1927[46] by Gregory raised doubt concerning everything outlined above. Gregory admitted that "The scientific world, however, was far from accepting without further evidence the validity of Professor Osborn's conclusion..." and that "Many authorities made the objection "Not proven", which is raised to nearly every striking new discovery or theory, and in course of time nine suggestions were put forward by responsible critics as to what the type of specimen of "Hesperopithecus" might represent other than any kind of ape and man."


So what happened?


"In the hope of discovering more remains of this highly interesting fossil, Professor Osborn send Mr. Albert Thomson, of the Museum staff, to collect in the Snake Creek beds of Nebraska in the summers of 1925 and 1926. At different times Mr. Thompson was joined there by Mr. Barnum Brown, Professor Othenio Abel, of Vienna, Professor Osborn and the writer [Gregory himself]. Among other material the expedition secured a series of specimens which have led the writer to doubt his former identification of the type as the upper molar of an extinct primate, and to suspect that the type specimen of Hesperopithecus haroldcookii may be an upper premolar of a species of Prosthennops, an extinct genus related to the modern peccaries [pigs]"

Gregory carries on saying that the teeth from the extinct pigs that were found were "more or less" similar to the Hesperopithecus teeth. But nothing was for sure, so he concluded "It is hoped that further exploration this summer (1927) will secure sufficient material to remove all doubt in this matter".

So is the tooth of a human? Ape? Ape-man? Horse? Raccoon-like? Pig? Gigantic mammal? Monkey?

An unknown man in 1928, in Nature[47] comments that an "interesting" article appeared in Science (referring to Gregory's article) which placed doubt to whether Hesperopithecus was even a primate. So he said that Gregory's opinion that the tooth is actually that of Prosthennops [pig] "carries the greatest weight".

Another man in 1928, in Nature[48] also mentioned that Hesperopithecus is in "great doubt".

Then pretty much Hesperopithecus died out. Osborn and everyone else, at least in the journals, do not talk about it anymore. It faded away in the pile of mistakes that scientist make, naturally (some though, intentionally).

It was briefly mentioned again in 1951 in Nature[49] which said "When in the early twenties a single tooth from Nebraska identified as that of an ape with certain human affinities, Hesperopithecus haroldcookii, was shown later to belong to a peccary..."

There you have it - this is the story of a tooth that was honoured six times by being mentioned in six different journals.

Summary

I decided to type up this story because I know there are a lot of misconceptions about this topic on the internet. I wanted to go through and show what really happened rather than adding my own interpretation to it (but I will in this summary). So what you read above are the words from primary sources, all of it, from the beginning to the end.

Is there something we can learn from this incident? Yes, that we should never haste in judgement and that science is, by it's very nature, an ever-changing process.

The story starts with honesty and ends with honesty which is good but of course there is no justification to the hype art that Amedee drew and that problem still remains with us today. Art is a powerful tool to tell and convince the public about your ideas. You think the art that evolutionist make has ended? No, far from it. Back in 1980's when a scrap of bones of Pakicetus was discovered, the Geological Education journal published an image of how the creature "looked" like. The image below (left) shows the skull of Pakicetus but the shaded areas are what was actually discovered and (right) a half whale-mammal was drawn. So the problem of art has not yet ended and it will never end.

Note that in the article, it says that the author just "...finished teaching a large lecture course on primate and human evolution recently." I guess he taught with more fanciful images?

In any case, after finishing writing this blog, I went to Stephen J Gould[51] to assess myself of the story of Hesperopithecus. Gould and I agree on all points but he mistakenly claimed that creationist don't believe that science is a self-correcting procedure.[52] Far from that, creationists are fed up with images created from little evidence just as they mention over and over again & their religion being attacked due to little evidence.[53] Creationist, here I'm specifically talking about Young Earth Creationist (as Gould, I'm sure, intentionally did) admit that science is "often self-correcting"[54]

I want to add that Othenio Abel (part of the team that excavated more fossils in the above saga) later in his life joined the Nazis.[55] He requested to found the "Research Institute for the History of Life" in Salzburg but despite sympathetic talks with the Nazis, it never happened - most likely due to the fact that he requested this in 1940, when Germany was at war.[56]

Also, see how Bryan was the smart one? He, from the start, doubted it despite ridicule.

Elliot Smith was clearly the most hyped of them all. Especially his collaboration with Forestier the artist.

Woodward was simply way too wrong - he misunderstood the 2 articles he cites thinking that they say Hesperopithecus was a missing link.

Osborn was ok.

Harold is innocent.

Abel joined the Nazi's and the Nazi's liked him.

Gregory, Hellman and Matthew did their job in respectable manner, especially when Gregory had the guts to retract the previous claims - something that evolutionist don't do these days.

Pycraft was the most careful.

But you know what? It's not honourable. You know why? It's a pig. Pigs are haram.

Homology


السلام عليكم و رحمة الله

Remember that homology means similarity between two different creatures due to common ancestor - anatomically or genetically (or molecular) . Which means that a human and a bacteria should have less in common than between a human and a chimp. The more unsimilar you are the further away the common ancestor between the two is and the more similar you are, the more recent your common ancestor is. Homology is used every time among evolutionist to determine the split between two creatures. This is the standard method used by Charles Darwin himself - which is why he believed that the humans and chimps had common ancestor due to their similarity. How can you falsify such belief? All you have to do is to show high similarity between creatures that look nothing like each other genetically or show less similarity between two creatures that look alike genetically. 

Here is an example to understand. Imagine a cat, bat and a bird. Based on Darwin's own method we just need to look and whoever looks similar had a recent common ancestor. Who is closer to the bird? The cat or the bat? It is obviously the bat. There is no question about it. Therefore the evidence of homology must point to high similarity between bat and bird and less similarity between cat and bird on the genetic level (because we already established that bat is more similar to bird than a cat - so anatomical homology should be in accordance to genetic similarity if homology is true). Yet to our surprise the genetic evidence contradicts the anatomical evidence. The cat is more similar to the bird than the bat. Sean B. Carrol said,

"...consider bats and birds, both of which have adaptations that enable flight. This superficial resemblance might imply that bats are more closely related to birds than they are to cats, which cannot fly. But a closer examination reveals that a bat's wing is far more similar to the forelimbs of cats... than to a bird's wing" [1]

So homology is contradicted and thus unreliable. At least that's what common sense dictates but evolutionist have their way out. This contradiction has it's own name called homoplasy (or convergent evolution - to sound too scientific). This means that similarity between unsimilar creatures is due to pure accident. It just happened to be similar. So homology contradicts homoplasy and homoplasy contradicts homology. Moreover you cannot falsify the data. It's either homology or homoplasy. If similarity can arise by pure chance then how exactly can we trust Darwin's own method? And since similarity and unsimilarity are both evidence for evolution then does homology or homoplasy have any real meaning? Despite the obvious contradiction between homology and homoplasy, they - the evolutionist - still use homology and homoplasy as if they don't contradict each other. Also how can you possibly know if something is homology or homoplasy? You can't. You simply make it up as you go along. If you want the alleged 99% similarity between apes and humans as homology then you say its homology and if you don't want to say that then say it's homoplasy. 

Homology is really the method of forging your own ancestors. It has no real meaning behind it or scientific evidence. It's mere conjecture and imagination. 

What I showed above is contradiction between anatomical and molecular evidence. But there is even a contradiction between molecular evidences.

Michael Lynch notes that a study, led by Wray (and others), showed similarities between genes and came with the date of 1.0 to 1.2 billion for the origin of major animal phyla.[2] But other works showed that the origin of major animal phyla is actually just 800 million years ago.[3] But other molecular evidence shows yet different stories. Lynch again notes that a study led by Ayala (and others) showed that the origin for the major phyla at 600-670 million years.[4] What that means is that even molecular evidence contradicts molecular evidence all the time. It was first assumed that all genes change at a constant rate but soon enough it was discovered that change occurs at an irregular rate: some fast, some slow.[5] An example would be histone protein which hardly changes and thus evolutionist will never use histone proteins[6] because then any creature would be our cousin and had recent common ancestor with us. That is bad because that would contradict the anatomical homology between chimps and humans. So here is evidence of molecular evidence contradicting molecular. Despite this blatant problems and unsolvable problems Lynch says,

"Given the substantial evolutionary time separating the animal phyla, it is not surprising that single-gene analyses yield such discordant results. Under such circumstances, the statistical noise associated with the substitution process leads to a high probability that phylogenetic analyses based on different molecules will yield different topologies. "[7]

Which simply means that whenever evolutionist want a data to suit them, they accept it and whenever they don't like it they refuse it with fairytale stories about quick change or some unknown event that changes everything. Also it means that different genes give different stories. (Topology in this context means trees)

But that's not all. There are genes that can't fit homology at all. Those genes are known as ORFan genes. Those genes are so unique they exhibit no similarity to any existing gene (that's why they are called orfan genes, which is orphan genes). Those ORFan genes are everywhere and evolutionist will not use those to make evolutionary trees since they won't fit the pattern they like. It is said that there 1000 ORFan genes in humans[8]. Get it? 1000 genes is equal to approximately 5-6% of our DNA. So how are we 99% or 98.5% or 97% similar to chimps? It's impossible. So add to the 5-6% the 2% alleged differences, you get 8% difference between humans and chimps - that is 92% similarity. No more 95% or above. No doubt more ORFan genes will be found and the alleged similarity will fade away. But the question is how does ORFan genes come to existence? It couldn't arise by gene duplication.[9] So where do they come from? Though there is no certain answer but some evolutionist claimed that ORFan genes came by a process called de novo. Which simply means once upon a time a junk gene existed[10]. This junk gene which is as good as a garbage bin changed as time went on and miraculously became functional and so unique. Yes garbage changed to purity and cleanliness by chance. This is how bad homology has become. It was believed that ORFan genes is impossible since homology/evolution doesn't predict that[11] but now it's flooding everywhere and anywhere. A false prediction.

Due to these problems you start to understand why ideas like the web of life, bush of life, forest of life etc come to rise. The tree of life as Dawkins once thought was true[12] has died. And the reason why there is even a tree, web or bush of life is because evolutionist assume that alleged similarity means common ancestor. If you stop assuming, you will have no tree, web or forest of life. What you will have is dots across the page, each dot representing sudden appearances of animals.

To summarise homology (also called "molecular evidence") is the method of forging your own ancestors. Remember the saying? The strong, the ones in power, writes history (i.e. lie about the past). It is happening in front of your eyes cloaked in a respected area of research called science. Homology "is still a funny word: in the context of proteins and genes, it makes sense only if we don’t think about it too deeply" and a "useless word"[13]

Here is another example when different body structure give you different stories. For example when Lucy was uncovered, the evolutionist believed that Lucy evolved into a Australopithecus africanus and then into you and me.

Why? Because the head of Lucy appeared more ape-like than africanus[14]. But then a discovery was made in Sterkfontein[15] which is of africanus which shows that its legs was more ape-like than Lucy's![16] So now the legs are giving a different story than the heads. Did Lucy's descendants revert back to apish-ness? If yes then how does that explain the alleged "human-like" head of africanus? 

That is just an example of how different body parts (head and leg in this case) give different stories. Now africanus is thrown away as a side-branch dead end since they don't want it to put doubt on Lucy. Of course all these fake tree drawings are just fancy trees they like. It may well be true that Lucy's descendants reverted (that's if Lucy had human-like legs) since evolution is random. But that's one example.

In fact one author denied Lucy altogether[17]. His claim is obviously rejected but Clarke discovered an Australopithecus which was not knuckle-walking (Lucy was) and he believed that it evolved into humans thus throwing Lucy to an evolutionary dead-end. He said that his discovery "argues against the commonly held view that human... ancestor would have been long-armed and knuckle-walk[ing]..." and that it argued against the fact that humans and chimps are closely related[18]

This all happened in 2002. Who knows what happened next but that Lucy vs africanus is definitely an important example. 

But taking this incident and reflect upon it, does homology really give a consistent story? Does it even give a story in the first place? Can fossil evidence even give a story? No. For example, here we have Lucy in all her glory, how do we know for sure that she evolved into humans? We don't know. What if she became  a chimpanzee? What if she and her family went actually extinct without evolving like africanus, robustus etc? How do we know for sure what really happened? What if Lucy isn't Lucy[19]? What if Lucy became Homo naledi?[20] We will never know. Homology fails to help and homoplasy refutes homology.

Gene duplication is a gene that is duplicated. So let's say for example you have gene which has the letters AAAA and you duplicate that to get another AAAA. So now you have two genes with the exact code. Then vision that the first gene changes and becomes AAAB whilst the other gene changes and becomes AAAG. There is 75% similarity between these two gene. That is exactly what gene duplication is, just longer codes.
